Primary Investigator
Dr Catherine Thompson
​
Catherine is a cognitive psychologist, and her research focuses on how factors such as task demand, experience, and the environment can affect cognition and performance in a variety of settings. Catherine has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Lincoln, and a MSc in Psychological Research Methods and a PhD from the University of Nottingham. Catherine worked as a lecturer at the University of Salford from 2010 to 2022 and in September 2022 she moved to Liverpool Hope University and now works as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology.
Primary Investigator
Martyn Matthews

Martyn is a Senior Lecture in Rehabilitation in the School of Health and Society at the University of Salford. He graduated from the University of Brighton with a BSc in Sports Science and completed a MSc in Nutrition and Physical Activity at St. Bartholemew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Martyn has over 35 years of experience in providing health and wellbeing support to elite athletes, military units, and the emergency services. He has a particular interest in adopting a multidisciplinary approach to performance enhancement.
Co-Investigator
Dr Steve Pearson

Steve is a Senior Lecturer in Human and Applied Physiology at the University of Salford. He has a BSc in Sports Science from Sunderland University and a PhD in Human Physiology from University College London. Steve is interested in human performance and environmental physiology.
Research Assistant
Lucy Ferrie
​
Lucy graduated from Royal Holloway University of London in 2020 with a BSc in Psychology and then went on to complete a MSc in Forensic Psychology.
After we completed the FSRTT project Lucy took a role at the University of Manchester working as a Research Project Assistant in the Manchester Centre for Audiology and Deafness.
Project Officer
Brian Highlands
​
Brian worked in the fire and rescue service for 28.5 years, working for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service from 1993. During his time in the fire service Brian fulfilled a variety of roles including Community Safety Officer, Operational Officer, and Station Manager (as part of a borough management team). Brian has a postgraduate diploma in Strategic Leadership and Management, a MSc in Business Management and in recent years was awarded Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
Since completion of the FSRTT project Brian has been working as a Project and Resource Planning Officer at the University of Salford.
