Lucy presents at the BPS Cognitive Section conference

Recently, our Research Assistant, Lucy Ferrie, had the opportunity to attend the annual conference of the British Psychological Society Cognitive Psychology Section and present preliminary findings from experiment one as a poster. The conference was hosted at the University of Sussex and the theme of the conference was “Back to the lab: Back to reality”, focusing on how to get back into the lab post-Covid, and the importance of conducting research that has meaning for everyday life. This was a great fit for our research given the real-world significance, and the fact that we are collecting data in the field.

Lucy started the conference well, with coffees and pastries (!) paired with a welcome presentation from the host organisation. This was followed by oral presentations on topics including “The effect of fair line-up modifications on child witness accuracy”, “Relationships amongst older adults’ cognitive and motor speech abilities” and “The physical and virtual world: how performance on cognitive tasks differs across real life and online tasks”. A talk that was of particular relevance to our project outlined a project that aimed to develop a web-based platform for testing and training situational awareness in firefighters.

This was Lucy’s first conference as a postgraduate researcher and speaking to other academics about the research design gave her the chance to consider the benefits and limitations of experiment one. This was helpful in preparing for experiment two and she was able to provide useful feedback to the team when she returned from Sussex.
